How does it
work?
From machine to wardrobe — and back again. KNIT+ closes the loop on fashion.
KNIT+ is a research microfactory of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA), run by the Fashion Research & Technology group at AMFI. The lab currently offers three distinct outfits, each designed by a different designer studio. Every garment is produced locally in Amsterdam on the Shima Seiki MACH-2XS 15G knitting machine at the 3DKnit Robot Lab.
Each design is available in multiple sizes to fit a range of bodies. All pieces are produced using the 3D seamless knitting process — meaning almost zero fabric waste. After each rental, garments are professionally cleaned and readied for the next wearer.
The collection features work from three independent studios: Studio Shoon, Cypher Studio, and Team Thursday — each bringing a distinct research perspective to what knitwear can be.
Our Production Process
Digital Design
Our computational designers create digital patterns that optimize yarn usage and minimize waste. Every stitch path is calculated before any physical material is committed.
Sustainable Materials
We source eco-friendly yarns, including GOTS certified organic cotton and responsibly sourced cashmere — chosen for both their material quality and reduced environmental footprint.
Robotic Production
The Shima Seiki 3D knitting robot translates digital designs into whole garments with minimal waste and no cutting. Made in Amsterdam, for Amsterdam.

Shared Ownership Model
What if fashion wasn't something we owned, but something we shared?
At KNIT+, we're exploring innovative approaches to fashion consumption through our shared ownership model. Each garment is a living object — it carries the stories of everyone who has worn it, and each rental adds another chapter. By sharing rather than owning, we reduce the environmental cost of fashion while keeping beautiful, research-driven design accessible to more people.
